Own Your Narrative

Everyone has a name, whether it’s the name given at birth, the name you choose to call yourself, a nickname, or a name given to you by others. There may be moments in your professional life when you realize your name – something you’ve established over time – has been used without your consent and is attached to derogatory and fictitious content that does not reflect who you are.

You are not alone if you’ve experienced reputational attacks, linked to your name, that were meant to unsettle you. The attack or attacker relies on shock, distortion, and hope that you will retreat or exhaust yourself trying to correct the fabrication.

The truth is that a credible reputation is not undone that easily.

Your reputation and professional name are not defined or determined by someone falsely tagging your name to derogatory websites and anonymous posts to paint you in a bad light and write your narrative. How you choose to lead, conduct your affairs, and live your life determines the credibility attached to your name, and not the actions of others.

If you are navigating this now, retain agency. Maintain control over your choices in the situation despite others’ actions; you have the authority to own and rewrite your narrative. Rewriting your narrative doesn’t mean confronting others or explaining your actions; move forward, stand in truth, and continue to operate in your uniqueness. Protect your peace while protecting your name. Your truth will always outlast a lie.

Author’s Note / Call to Action

Remember: if you are facing a similar situation, your credibility remains intact. Your story is yours to tell. If this has helped you, consider sharing it with someone who may need encouragement in owning their narrative.
